Sylvie BaudinoProfessor Emeritus

Sylvie Baudino began her career at the Limagrain seed group, where she worked for 10 years on plant breeding. In 2000, she joined the Laboratory of Plant Biotechnologies Applied to aromatic and medicinal plants (LBVpam) at the University of Saint-Etienne. She became a university professor in 2009 and was elected director of LBVpam in 2011, a position she held until 2023.
Upon her arrival, she led research on the scent of roses. How are scent molecules produced in roses and why are some roses unscented? These are the questions that Sylvie Baudino and her team are trying to answer. In 2015, Sylvie Baudino's team revealed for the first time a new pathway for the biosynthesis of monoterpenes, molecules that are very important in the fragrance of roses. This major result was published and featured on the cover of the prestigious journal Science in 2015. The discovery of this gene has opened up new perspectives for rose breeding, which could be exploited to increase the fragrance of these iconic flowers.
Sylvie Baudino has been Professor Emeritus at LBVpam since December 2024, where she continues her research on the fragrance of roses.
