[Paper📰] Production of the monoterpenoid acid moiety of pyrethrins, trans-chrysanthemol, in the moss Physcomitrium patens To go straight to the article: https://lnkd.in/eEtmdw6f "Biopesticides are gaining attention as eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic pesticides, driven by growing concerns about health and environmental impacts. Pyrethrins, a natural class of insecticides derived from the flowers of Tanacetum cinerariifolium, are highly valued for their efficiency and minimal environmental and animal toxicity. Their biosynthetic route involves the biosynthesis of two moieties, a monoterpenoid acid and an alcohol moiety, which fuse to form the esters responsible for their insecticidal activity. In this study, we investigated Physcomitrium patens, a model bryophyte, as a potential biological chassis for pyrethrin biosynthesis. By expressing the essential enzyme chrysanthemyl diphosphate synthase (TcCDS), we successfully produced trans-chrysanthemol at levels comparable to those observed in angiosperm hosts. However, trans-chrysanthemic acid yields were lower than reported for other biotechnological experiments, highlighting that further optimization is needed. The results position P. patens as a promising platform for the sustainable production of small molecules and pyrethrins, offering new avenues for future biotechnological applications." We specialise in the study of the diversity and biosynthesis of volatile compounds in aromatic plants - UJM / CNRS
About us
Our research aims to better understand the mechanisms of production, secretion and the roles of volatile compounds in aromatic plants. Among these volatile compounds, we are particularly interested in terpenoids.

🔎 The secretory glands are responsible for the emission of essential oil in several plants. As you now know from a previous post, in pelargoniums, they are found on the leaves 🌿 They are formed by small outgrowths called 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬. At the end of these trichomes, inside a round cuticle (a small membrane) is the fragrant essential oil 🟢 When an insect, or our hands, brush against them, the cuticles tear and release the oil. You can then smell a strong sent on your fingers 👃 *************************************************************** 📖 Description of the pictures: - 1️⃣: Trichomes with a drop of essential oil on top - 2️⃣: cut of pelargonium showing trichomes full of essential oil (the essential oil is at the end of the little trichomes, it is round and shiny). - 3️⃣: looking at a pelargonium leaf with a magnifying glass. The magnification allows you to see the trichomes on the surface of the leaf. Photo credits: ©️Frédéric Jullien #pelargonium #essentialoil #science #trichomes #plants #biology

Yesterday's activity: field trip 🏞️ Aurélie, our development engineer, went to the Roseraie de Saint-Galmier to get some rose samples to do RNA sequencing. 💡RNA sequencing is used to target the genes expressed when the flowers are collected. Aurélie collected flowers at different stages (still in bud, open, etc.) in order to determine the differences in gene expression depending on the maturity of the flower. To find out more about the different stages of sampling, see the carousel ⬇️ #sampling #garden #RNA #biology #roses #science #plants

⚕️International Day of Plant Health🌱 Our health and that of the planet depend on plants. They provide 98% of the oxygen we breathe 🌳 That's why today, Nazanin, our crop technician, will give you some advice to take care of your plants, and in particular roses🌹 First off, now is a great time to add green fertilizer and repot🪴 It's also the right time to trim them✂️ Remember to remove diseased leaves and dispose of them in the bin as the disease will spread in the soil🍂 If you wish to deserb around the foot, do it by hand 🤏 To prevent disease, you can apply a light sulphur treatment, but always sparingly 💦 Your roses have aphids? Don't panic! Black soap will be enough to get rid of them⚫ And for the final touch, a big dose of love for your favourite plants 💚 #planthealth #flowers #spring #gardening #roses

[We 💚 plants] Introducing 𝑃𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑢𝑚 🪴 You can also call me lemongrass pelargonium. As my name suggests, if you rub my leaves, they will deposit a strong smell of citronella on your fingers! 👃 And yes, like all pelargoniums, it's my leaves that release the scent, not my flowers! 🌿 Such as my congeners, I'm originally from South Africa 🇿🇦 If you want to spot me, I'm recognisable by my beautiful pink flowers with red markings on the upper petals. These marks enable me to direct pollinators 🐝 I'm studied because I'm diploid, meaning that like humans, I have two sets of homologous chromosomes, which makes it easier to study my genetics 🧬 And also because I produce a lot of citral, which gives me my lemongrass scent. The next time you pass me by, come and rub my leaves, you won't be disappointed! Photo credit ©️Frédéric Jullien #flower #pelargonium #citral #frangrance #science #plants #terpenoids

[Paper📰] A practical workflow to facilitate analysis of the emission dynamics of non-target BVOCs in terrestrial ecosystems by PTR-TOF-MS To go straight to the article: https://lnkd.in/eXbHHXh5 "Proton Transfer Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS) provides high-resolution, real-time tracking of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), yet its analytical workflows for complex mixtures are often underexplored. This study presents a flexible data analysis workflow tailored for PTR-TOF-MS, designed to manage datasets with multiple replicates and experimental factors efficiently." [🔎Our plants] Meet the Pelargonium! 🪴 The botanical genus 𝑃𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑢𝑚 covers 280 species. It should be distinguished from the genus 𝐺𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑢𝑚, from which it differs in the organisation of its petals, the number of stamens and its nectariferous spur. Pelargonium have been studied in the laboratory for 12 years ⬇️ 🪴For the diversity of its fragrant compounds. Pelargoniums produce a very wide variety of odours, the biosynthesis pathways of which, meaning the essential oil production, are still poorly understood. Rose-scented pelargoniums are widely used in the perfume industry. 🪴For the diversity of its secretory glands. Pelargoniums secrete and store their volatile compounds at the end of small excrescences, in a pocket surrounded by a thin membrane. These outgrowths are called trichomes. They are a good model for studying secretion. Photo credits ©️Frédéric Jullien Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eh3jcwcq #plants #science #VOC #frangrances #terpenoids
